The Great Green Wall promised 100 million hectares by 2030. The progress figure depends on who is counting.

The African-led Great Green Wall aims to restore 100 million hectares, create 10 million jobs and capture 250 million tonnes of carbon by 2030, across an 8,000 km belt from Senegal to Djibouti. UNCCD materials put completion near 18 percent, while counts limited to the original tree-planting zone come out near 4 percent, and that gap is the story.

Maiduguri under water: what the Alau Dam flood figures do and do not show

On 10 September 2024 a breach of the Alau Dam flooded about 40 percent of Maiduguri. OCHA figures cited by UNICEF put deaths at 37, with close to 400,000 displaced people registered in camps within a week, while investigators dispute how a dam that received repair money ended up in that state.

The Congo Basin still absorbs carbon - but how much, and for how long, is contested

The Congo Basin is the largest remaining net carbon sink in the tropics, yet published figures for how much carbon it takes up differ widely because they measure different things. At the same time, about 780,000 hectares of its primary forest were lost in 2024, and peer-reviewed work shows the wider tropical sink has been weakening since the 1990s.

Zanzibar's record year: 917,167 visitors — and an argument about whether more is better

Zanzibar received 917,167 international visitors in 2025, up 24.5% on 2024 and the highest total in its history, on official statistics. December alone brought more than 100,000 arrivals. Now operators and officials are debating whether the island should chase a million visitors — or chase higher spending per visitor instead.
