Cassava's AI factory: what was announced, and what is actually running
In March 2025 Cassava Technologies said it would build Africa's first AI factory with NVIDIA, starting in South Africa and then expanding to Egypt, Kenya, Morocco and Nigeria. Deployment in South Africa has since begun, but the other countries remain a plan, not a finished build.
Key points
- Announced in March 2025: South Africa first, by June 2025, then Egypt, Kenya, Morocco and Nigeria.
- Deployment in South Africa has begun, according to Cassava reporting in March 2026.
- The four expansion countries are still described as plans, not completed sites.
- Cassava said in November 2025 it had acquired 12,000 NVIDIA GPUs - that is the company's own claim.
What happened
An AI factory is a data centre filled with powerful chips for training and running AI models. Cassava's pitch is that African businesses, governments and researchers should be able to do that work on computers inside Africa, instead of sending their data abroad.
The announcement was real and specific about order: South Africa first, then four other countries. What it did not do is finish five factories at once. Keeping those two things separate - announced and built - is the point of this story.
Claim by claim
Why this label: The announcement is on the record, dated and quoted from both companies.
On the ladder: a claim earns Verified from primary evidence, or from two independent sources that do not copy each other.
Why this label: That order and those five countries are stated in the original announcement.

Why this label: Reported in March 2026 as a first milestone, with the other countries described as where it plans to scale.

Why this label: No source we opened reports a completed, operating factory in those four countries. They are still described in the language of plans.
On the ladder: the evidence so far sits low — early, single or social sources. We publish the claim as a claim, never as fact.
Why this label: This is founder Strive Masiyiwa's statement, reported in November 2025. We found no independent count of the chips.

What we know / what we don't know yet
What we know
- The March 2025 announcement, its five countries and its South Africa-first order are documented.
- South African deployment has begun, according to Cassava's own later statement.
- The expansion countries are consistently described as planned, not finished.
What we don't know yet
- How many GPUs are installed and working in South Africa today, as opposed to acquired or planned.
- When any of Egypt, Kenya, Morocco or Nigeria will have an operating site.
Why it matters
A working AI factory in Africa would let local firms and researchers train models without renting computers overseas, and would keep data inside African borders. That only matters if the machines are actually installed and switched on, which is why the gap between announcement and operation is worth tracking.
