Two killed and 16 injured as an intercity bus carrying school pupils crashes near Lent in eastern France
An intercity coach left the road on the D22 near Lent, south of Bourg-en-Bresse in eastern France, on Friday morning and hit a tree in the ditch. The Bourg-en-Bresse prosecutor's office says two people were killed — one minor and one person who had just turned adult — and 16 were injured, three of them in absolute emergency. Forty-three people were on board, including 15 minors on their way to school. Prosecutors have opened an inquiry for road homicide and aggravated road injuries; the driver is in hospital and has not yet been questioned. Early reports, including a post by the prime minister, said two children had died — the prosecutor's and prefecture's later account, carried here, corrects that to one minor and one young adult.

Key points
- Two people were killed — one minor and one person who had just turned adult — and 16 injured, three critically, when an intercity coach left the road near Lent on Friday morning, the prosecutor says.
- Forty-three people were on board, including 15 minors travelling to school; the coach was a regular regional line from Lyon toward Bourg-en-Bresse.
- Prosecutors opened an inquiry for road homicide and aggravated road injuries; the driver is in hospital and has not yet been questioned, and no cause is established.
- Early reports, including the prime minister's post, said two children had died — the prosecutor's later account corrects that, and this page carries the correction openly.
What happened
The crash happened on the D22 near Lent, a commune south of Bourg-en-Bresse in the Ain department. The prefect activated the departmental operations centre, two helicopters were deployed, and victims and families were received in Lent's village hall with a psychological-support cell, AFP reports. Transport Minister Philippe Tabarot announced on X that he was travelling to the scene, as was the president of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region.
Education Minister Édouard Geffray said: 'It is always a difficult moment when our students, our children, are victims of an accident like this.' The coach was carrying pupils among its ordinary passengers on a school morning — the combination that makes a road crash a national story in France.
Claim by claim
Why this label: Verified on the prosecutor's and prefecture's statements as carried by AFP (read via Boursorama in this run) and in agreement in AP's report. Transport Minister Philippe Tabarot gave the same 2 dead / 16 injured / 3 critical figures in BBC reporting. The toll is the authorities' provisional count and is labelled provisional in French reporting — it could change for the three critical cases, which is why this page is in Checking state.
On the ladder: a claim earns Verified from primary evidence, or from two independent sources that do not copy each other.
Why this label: Verified on the prosecutor's figure (43 on board, 15 minors) via AFP, with the prefecture's intercity-line description. The 'school bus' wording in early official remarks is carried as what was said, not as the vehicle's classification — the distinction is kept visible rather than smoothed over.
On the ladder: a claim earns Verified from primary evidence, or from two independent sources that do not copy each other.
Why this label: Verified as a correction: Reuters carried the prime minister's 'two children' line earlier in the morning; the prosecutor/prefecture account (AFP, AP) supersedes it. This page leads with the corrected version and records the earlier one openly, under the replace-don't-stack rule.

Why this label: Verified on the prosecutor's statement via AFP for the inquiry, its legal framing and the gendarmerie. The cause is not stated anywhere in the official reporting read — no mechanical fault, medical event or road-condition factor is claimed on this page.
On the ladder: a claim earns Verified from primary evidence, or from two independent sources that do not copy each other.
Why this label: Declared, not hidden: this page carries the prosecutor's three-critical figure and does not settle the crash's exact minute. The response operation (prefect Louis-Xavier Thirode activating the departmental operations centre, two helicopters, about 50 gendarmes) is reported by AFP; one Catalan wire's larger response figures (102 firefighters, 58 vehicles) are single-source and are not carried.
On the ladder: the evidence so far sits low — early, single or social sources. We publish the claim as a claim, never as fact.
What we know / what we don't know yet
What we know
- The prosecutor's toll: two killed (one minor, one just-turned adult), 16 injured, three in absolute emergency — provisional and subject to change.
- 43 people were on board, including 15 minors; an inquiry for road homicide and aggravated road injuries is open.
- The early 'two children' report has been corrected by the prosecutor and prefecture.
What we don't know yet
- The cause of the loss of control — none has been established.
- The identities and exact ages of the dead and injured — not published; specific ages in low-quality reports are not carried.
- The driver's condition and account — he has not yet been questioned.

- Whether the toll changes for the three critically injured.
Why it matters
A routine school-morning coach ride ended with two young people dead and three fighting for their lives, on a regular regional line used by pupils every day. The investigation's first questions — the vehicle's state, the driver's condition, the road — are exactly the ones not yet answered, which is why this page separates the prosecutor's confirmed facts from everything still open.
Background
The Lyon–Bourg-en-Bresse intercity coach leaves the road at Lent, hits a tree and ends in the ditch.
Early reports, including the prime minister's post, say two children died; the prosecutor and prefecture later state one minor and one just-turned adult were killed, with 16 injured.
