What happened
The attack happened at kilometre 137 of the Atlantic highway in Rio Hondo, in the eastern department of Zacapa, which Portillo Paz represented in Congress. The Interior Ministry said his police detail was repelling a direct attack by unidentified assailants when the three officers were killed.
The killing comes about three weeks after former anti-corruption prosecutor Juan Francisco Solorzano Foppa was shot dead in Guatemala City, a case that heightened concerns about organised crime's influence and the possible return of politically motivated assassinations. Authorities have not established a connection between the two attacks.

Why it matters
A sitting congressman and his police guard shot dead on a main highway is a direct challenge to the Guatemalan state, in a department on drug-trafficking routes. Who ordered the attack, and whether it connects to other recent political killings, are the questions the investigation now has to answer.
