'Judge my record': Ruto dares his rivals while the opposition shops for a single candidate
President William Ruto used Mashujaa Day in Eldoret to warn that the 'political transition' of 2022 'must not be reversed', and days earlier challenged rivals to match his record. The opposition's answer is a rolling series of rallies — and an unresolved argument about who should lead it into August 2027.
Key points
- Ruto's Mashujaa Day message in Eldoret on 20 October: 'Next year, we will return to the ballot box. The political transition we began in 2022 must not be reversed.'
- In Baringo on 15 October he offered his record for judgement: 'I am ready to be held to account on the agenda I sold to the people of Kenya.'
- On 25 October, Ndindi Nyoro and Fred Matiang'i rallied in Rongai, Kajiado, attacking the government on school funding, the cost of living and the university lecturers' strike.
- Opposition figures are pressing for a united ticket against Ruto; no single challenger has been agreed.
What happened
Kenya's next general election is in August 2027. Ruto's strategy is visible in his lines: make the election a referendum on his development record and dare the opposition to produce an alternative plan. His rivals' strategy is equally visible — keep the cost of living and public services at the centre, and solve the unity problem that has defeated Kenyan oppositions before.
The personnel are in motion. Former deputy president Rigathi Gachagua has been hosting opposition figures at his Wamunyoro home in Nyeri; MP Anthony Kibagendi, of the Linda Mwananchi movement, predicts a 2002-style two-horse race — the year a united opposition ended KANU's rule. Kirinyaga governor Anne Waiguru, for the government side, says the opposition will never unite and claims 35 of 47 counties for Ruto.

Why this label: Linda Mwananchi figures such as MP Anthony Kibagendi predict a 2002-style united ticket and a two-horse race. Governor Anne Waiguru, backing Ruto, says the opposition 'will not unite' and claims 35 of 47 counties already back the president. Both are predictions by interested politicians; no joint candidate has been announced.
On the ladder: credible sources conflict, so we show both workings. One side's own statement is that side's position — never proof.
Why this label: That is his own framing. The opposition's counter — raised at Rongai and echoed in polling — is that the lived record for many households is the cost of living; in Research 8020's September survey, 65 percent named it their top concern. 'Record' is the argument of this election, not a settled fact.

What we know / what we don't know yet
What we know
- The election is in August 2027; Ruto is campaigning on continuity, the opposition on change.
- No united opposition candidate exists yet.
What we don't know yet
- Whether Gachagua, Sifuna, Kalonzo and Matiang'i can agree a single ticket — the talks are real, the outcome is not.
- Whether the lecturers' strike and school-funding disputes will be settled before they harden into campaign issues.
Why it matters
Kenya's 2027 election is being set up as a referendum on one man's record against an opposition that agrees on the problem but not the candidate. The next ten months are the negotiation — and every rally, poll and prediction in this story is a move inside it.
