Police confirm 14 Islamiya students abducted on a farm in Niger State's Rafi area — rescue effort under way

Niger State police have confirmed that suspected bandits abducted about 14 students of an Islamic school in the Rafi Local Government Area on Saturday 31 October. Police spokesman Wasiu Abiodun said on Monday that the students were helping their Mallam (teacher) harvest maize on a farm at Tungan-Bako village when the attackers struck at about 12:30pm, that the number was about 14 and not 50 as reported in some quarters, and that joint security rescue efforts are ongoing. Reports that the teacher was also taken appear in some outlets' headlines but are not in the police statement quoted. Separate reports from the same weekend — of pupils taken at Maikujeri and of 14 women taken on a farm at Mekunjeri, also in Rafi — conflict with each other and, in the women's case, had no police or state-government statement when they were filed; whether they describe the same event or different ones is not established, and they are not carried here as fact.

Key points

  • Police-confirmed: about 14 Islamiya students, helping their Mallam harvest maize at Tungan-Bako, Rafi LGA, taken at about 12:30pm on Saturday 31 October (spokesman Wasiu Abiodun, via Osun Defender and Matrix News).
  • The police themselves corrected the higher figure: 14, not 50 as reported in some quarters.
  • Joint security rescue efforts are ongoing, the spokesman said; no release or ransom demand for this group had been reported when this page published.
  • Other Rafi reports from the same weekend (Maikujeri pupils; Mekunjeri women) conflict and are unconfirmed — they are not merged into this count.

What happened

The abduction happened on a farm, not at a school building: the students had gone with their teacher to help harvest maize at Tungan-Bako village, in the Pandogari area of Rafi LGA, when the attackers struck on Saturday afternoon. The police confirmation came two days later, on Monday, alongside the correction of the 50-student figure that had circulated.

Rafi, in Niger State's north, has been one of the local government areas repeatedly hit by bandit attacks on villages and farms. In the reports read for this page, the only official response so far is the police statement and the rescue effort it announces; a political spokesman for an opposition governorship candidate used the confirmation to criticise Governor Mohammed Bago's handling of security — a political position, carried in the outlets' reports, not a finding.

Niger State Police Command spokesman Wasiu Abiodun confirmed on Monday that suspected bandits invaded Tungan-Bako village via Rafi LGA at about 12:30pm on Saturday 31 October 2026 and abducted people working on a farm; the abducted were about 14 students of an Islamiya who were helping their Mallam harvest maize, and joint security rescue efforts are ongoing.

Why this label: Verified as the police spokesman's own statement: his words are quoted identically by Osun Defender and Matrix News, both read in full in this pass ('On 31/10/2026 at about 12.30pm, suspected bandits invaded Tungan-Bako village via Rafi LGA… the abducted victims were about 14 students of an Islamiya helping their Mallam to harvest maize… joint security rescue efforts are ongoing'). Two independent outlets carrying the same primary statement, in agreement on every detail.

Abiodun clarified that the number abducted was 14, not 50 as reported in some quarters.

Why this label: The clarification is part of the same police statement, carried identically by Osun Defender and Matrix News (both read in full). It settles the 50 figure as a report the police themselves corrected — the corrected figure is the spokesman's 'about 14'.

On the ladder: a claim earns Verified from primary evidence, or from two independent sources that do not copy each other.

Some reports say the students' teacher was also abducted.

Why this label: Osun Defender's report says the gunmen 'whisked away the students and their teacher' and Matrix News carries the teacher in its headline, but the police statement both outlets quote speaks only of about 14 students and does not list the Mallam among the abducted. The teacher's status is therefore carried as not yet verified, in the don't-know list, until a police or family account settles it.

On the ladder: the evidence so far sits low — early, single or social sources. We publish the claim as a claim, never as fact.

Separate reports describe other abductions in Rafi LGA the same weekend — pupils of Madarasatul Nurul Islam taken at Maikujeri (numbers given variously as about 12 to 18) and 14 women taken on a farm at Mekunjeri, with captors said to be demanding food supplies.

Why this label: The Maikujeri/Mekunjeri reports conflict on place, day, victims and numbers, and ThisDay — read in full in this pass — states that on the Mekunjeri incident the police and the state government had issued no official statement when it filed. Whether these are the Tungan-Bako event reported inconsistently or separate incidents is NOT established; they are carried here only as unresolved reports, never merged into the police-confirmed count.

What we know / what we don't know yet

What we know

  • The police account: place (Tungan-Bako, Rafi LGA), time (about 12:30pm, Saturday 31 October), victims (about 14 Islamiya students helping their Mallam harvest maize) and the correction of the 50 figure — the spokesman's own words, quoted identically by two outlets.
  • That a joint security rescue effort is under way, on the spokesman's statement.

What we don't know yet

  • Whether the teacher (Mallam) was also taken — some reports say so; the police statement quoted does not say it.
  • The students' names, ages and school, and whether any have been released or rescued since Monday's statement.
  • Whether the Maikujeri and Mekunjeri reports from the same weekend are this event misreported or separate abductions — and if separate, their true numbers.
Show more (1)
  • Any ransom or other demand made for the Tungan-Bako group, and who the attackers are — no group had been named by police in the reports read.

Why it matters

Fourteen children taken from a maize farm in the middle of a Saturday afternoon is the farm-belt insecurity crisis in one incident: the victims were not in a classroom but working the harvest, and the first official word came two days later, correcting a rumoured figure nearly four times the real one. Until the rescue effort reports back, the confirmed facts are the police spokesman's — and this page holds the line there, rather than blending three conflicting weekend reports into a bigger, wronger story.

Background

  • Suspected bandits invade a farm at Tungan-Bako village, Rafi LGA, and abduct about 14 Islamiya students who were helping their Mallam harvest maize (police statement).

  • Other reports circulate from Rafi LGA — pupils at Maikujeri and women on a farm at Mekunjeri — with conflicting numbers and no police statement on those reports.

  • Police spokesman Wasiu Abiodun confirms the Tungan-Bako abduction, corrects the number to about 14 (not 50) and says joint security rescue efforts are ongoing.
