What happened

Rybakina rose to world No. 1 for the first time after winning the US Open in September — her third Grand Slam title, after Wimbledon and this year's Australian Open — per the WTA and Reuters reports of Thursday's match. Reuters reports she arrived in Tokyo after winning her fourth title of the season, and her first as the top-ranked player, at last week's Ningbo Open in China, and that she needed one more victory this year to keep world No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka from overtaking her.

The Tokyo event is a WTA 500 tournament at the Ariake Coliseum. Per Reuters, Rybakina is targeting a 16th career title in Tokyo before heading to the WTA Finals, where the season's top eight players compete from 8–15 November.
