At least 21 dead as a migrant pirogue capsizes off Senegal — the toll is provisional, the Interior Ministry says
A pirogue carrying more than 200 people capsized off Senegal's northwestern coast on Saturday night 7 November, and at least 21 people died. Senegal's Interior Ministry said on Sunday that 21 bodies had been recovered and one person rescued, that the toll was provisional, and that the search was continuing and victims' families were being helped. Media reports place the capsizing off the Loumpoul dunes in the Kébémer department, between Dakar and Saint-Louis, and say the boat was heading for Spain's Canary Islands on the Atlantic route.

What happened
Pirogues — the long wooden boats of Senegal's fishing coast — are regularly used for the Atlantic crossing to the Canary Islands, a journey of well over a thousand kilometres of open ocean. Saturday's capsizing happened close to shore, off the dunes at Loumpoul, and most of those aboard were still unaccounted for in the first reports.
On the same Saturday, Senegalese authorities intercepted another boat with 142 people aboard, also bound for Spain — a measure of how many attempts the route is seeing this season.
Claim by claim
Why this label: The ministry's statement is reported in the same terms by AFP, Al Jazeera and DW; the toll's provisional status is the ministry's own word and is carried in the headline.
On the ladder: a claim earns Verified from primary evidence, or from two independent sources that do not copy each other.
Why this label: The number aboard and the destination are reported by both Al Jazeera and DW from the ministry's statement and agency reporting; with 21 bodies recovered and one person rescued, most of those aboard were unaccounted for in the reports read.
On the ladder: a claim earns Verified from primary evidence, or from two independent sources that do not copy each other.
Why this label: The location and the victims' home districts come from media reports carried in AFP's syndication, not from the text of the ministry's statement as read, so they are labelled accordingly.
On the ladder: the evidence so far sits low — early, single or social sources. We publish the claim as a claim, never as fact.

Why this label: The IOM's description is carried in AFP's reporting via Euronews; the interception of the second boat is the authorities' announcement, reported in the same syndication.

What we know / what we don't know yet
What we know
- The Interior Ministry's statement: 21 bodies recovered, one person rescued, the toll provisional, the search continuing.
- The boat carried more than 200 people and was heading for the Canary Islands, Al Jazeera and DW report.
What we don't know yet
- How many of the more than 200 people aboard are still missing — no missing figure had been published in the reports read.
- What caused the pirogue to capsize — no cause had been reported.
- The identities of the dead — Le Soleil's report that most victims were from Léona and Thiéppe has not been officially confirmed.
Why it matters
The Atlantic route keeps producing Senegal's deadliest days at sea, and this one began within sight of home: more than 200 people aboard a fishing pirogue, 21 bodies recovered, one survivor found, and a search still running. The ministry's own word for the toll — provisional — is the honest state of the count, and it is carried that way here.
