Komyshuvakha bombing toll rises to 29, with 48 still missing — a school used to hand out aid, then a shelter, hit in Zaporizhzhia region
The death toll from Monday's Russian aerial-bomb attack on the village of Komyshuvakha, southeast of the city of Zaporizhzhia, rose to 29 on Tuesday, with 48 people still missing, the acting head of the regional military administration, Mykhailo Semikin, said (AP, read in full in this pass). The dead include four police officers and two rescue workers. Ukraine's State Emergency Service had put the toll at 26 on Monday evening, after President Zelensky's first figure of 18 and an interim SES count of 24 — each stage replaced in place on this page, never stacked. Zelensky, writing on Telegram on Monday, said bombs first hit a school used every week to distribute humanitarian assistance, and that a repeat strike then hit a shelter where people were gathered. The bombing was part of a nationwide overnight wave: Zelenskyy put it at 289 attack drones, 17 ballistic missiles and 59 cruise missiles across nine regions, and in Kharkiv a strike on a medical facility wounded at least 62 people, with more than 200 patients transferred to other hospitals.

Key points
- Zelensky, on Telegram on Monday: Russian aerial bombs hit Komyshuvakha in Zaporizhzhia region — first a school used to distribute humanitarian aid, then, in a repeat strike, nine more bombs on a shelter where people were gathered (Reuters; Le Monde).
- The toll has risen again: 29 killed and 48 still missing on Tuesday, per the acting regional head, Mykhailo Semikin (AP) — replacing Monday's SES figure of 26 killed and the earlier missing count of 27 in place, not stacked. Among the dead: four police officers and two rescue workers.
- Zelensky's position: the attackers could not have been unaware aid was handed out at the school every week. Russia's Defence Ministry has spoken about the night generally — it says 856 Ukrainian drones were shot down — but no Russian statement on the Komyshuvakha strike itself had been read.
- The strike came hours after fighting resumed in the neighbouring Kherson region at the end of the six-day Oleshky truce (Vozia's live Oleshky story).
What happened
Komyshuvakha is a rural settlement in Zaporizhzhia Raion, southeast of the regional capital, Zaporizhzhia city, with a population of about 5,251 in the 2022 estimate. It sits close enough to the front line that it has been struck repeatedly during the war, and — on Zelensky's account — its remaining residents have been receiving humanitarian assistance at the village school every week.
The bombing lands on the first day after the war's longest local pause ended: the six-day Oleshky ceasefire in the neighbouring Kherson region expired at midnight on Sunday, fighting resumed in Kherson region on Monday morning, and each side has accused the other of using the pause to regroup — the story Vozia follows on its live Oleshky page. No source read for this page links the Komyshuvakha strike to the truce's end; the timing is context, not a claimed connection.
Claim by claim
Why this label: Verified as the president's own account: Reuters' report (read in full in this pass) carries the Telegram statement's wording, and Le Monde's live coverage of the war carries the same announcement, including the morning timing and the school used for humanitarian purposes. This claim is what Zelensky said happened; the casualty toll inside his announcement is carried separately below, at its own label.
On the ladder: a claim earns Verified from primary evidence, or from two independent sources that do not copy each other.
Why this label: Tuesday's figure is Semikin's, reported by AP (read in full in this pass) and carried identically by other outlets reporting the same AP account and regional statements. The SES remains the primary authority for the rescue operation; its Monday figure of 26 was verified at the time against UNITED24 Media and wire reporting. Casualty tolls in an ongoing rescue are the authorities' running counts, labelled with their source and stage — the count may rise again while 48 people are missing.
On the ladder: a claim earns Verified from primary evidence, or from two independent sources that do not copy each other.
Why this label: Verified as the president's stated position, in his own Telegram words as carried by Reuters (read in full in this pass). It is carried here as his position — Vozia has no independent evidence in this pass about what the attacking force knew, and no Russian statement on this strike had been read.

Why this label: The missing count is the regional head's running figure: 27 on Monday (reported by the BBC, read in full at the time) and 48 on Tuesday (reported by AP, read in full in this pass), edited in place under replace-don't-stack. A missing count in an ongoing rescue is not a death toll — some of the missing may be found alive — so it stays labelled Not yet verified and is never added to the death toll on this page.
On the ladder: the evidence so far sits low — early, single or social sources. We publish the claim as a claim, never as fact.
Why this label: Verified as the president's stated position and as the absence of a Russian comment, both in the BBC's full report (read in full in this pass). The position is carried as his position; 'has not publicly commented' is the position at the time that report was read.
On the ladder: a claim earns Verified from primary evidence, or from two independent sources that do not copy each other.
Why this label: The barrage totals are Zelenskyy's own figures (AP, read in full). The Kharkiv toll is the local authorities' figure, reported by AP and, for the medical-facility strike, by Anadolu Agency (its governor-sourced account) and by DPA's syndicated report — DPA itself notes the reports could not initially be independently verified, and no non-Ukrainian-official source has confirmed the casualty figures, so the whole claim is labelled Not yet verified even though three wire chains carry it.
On the ladder: the evidence so far sits low — early, single or social sources. We publish the claim as a claim, never as fact.
Why this label: Verified as the Russian officials' stated positions, all reported by AP (read in full in this pass) and carried as their claims — Vozia has not verified the drone counts or the refinery casualties, and none of these statements addresses the Komyshuvakha strike itself, on which no Russian comment had been read.

What we know / what we don't know yet
What we know
- What Zelensky announced, in his own words: the place (Komyshuvakha), the sequence (school used for aid, then a nine-bomb repeat strike on a shelter), carried identically by Reuters and Le Monde — and the State Emergency Service's own count, which has now landed: 26 killed on Monday evening (SES via UNITED24 Media), rising to 29 on Tuesday with four police officers and two rescue workers among the dead (acting regional head Semikin, via AP).
- That the toll has risen in stages — 18 in the president's first announcement, 24 then 26 in the SES counts on Monday, and 29 on Tuesday per the acting regional head (AP) — with 48 people still missing on Tuesday's figure and the search continuing.
- That the regional head has now given his own figures: 27 people still missing, rescue teams working with people still under the rubble, and at least nine 3,000kg bombs (Semikin, via the BBC; the 27-missing figure is carried identically by the Kyiv Independent, attributed to local authorities).
What we don't know yet
- Whether the toll rises further — the rescue is still under way, 48 people are still listed missing by the regional head, and the dead's names beyond the two rescue workers the SES named have not been published in the reports read.
- Whether an aid distribution was under way at the moment of the strike, and how many people were in the shelter.
- Russia's account, if one is issued — none had been read when this page published.

- The exact times of the two strikes beyond Le Monde's and Zelensky's 'in the morning'.
- Whether the 48 missing are alive under the rubble — the rescue is still under way, and the missing count is the regional head's figure, not a confirmed toll.
- Whether the Kharkiv and Dnipro casualty figures (62 injured; one killed and 17 wounded) will be confirmed by any source independent of the Ukrainian authorities — three wire chains carry the officials' figures, but DPA notes they could not initially be independently verified.
Why it matters
On the president's account, this was not a strike that went astray: it was a double strike — a school where aid is handed out every week, then the shelter people had gathered in. With 29 confirmed dead and 48 still missing, it is one of the deadliest single strikes on a Ukrainian village in this phase of the war, and it landed in a nationwide overnight barrage — hospitals hit in Kharkiv and Dnipro — on the first night after the front line's longest local truce gave way to resumed fighting next door in Kherson region.
Background
Show the background timeline (4)
A localised ceasefire holds in the Oleshky sector of Kherson region — the longest local pause of the war — while aid is delivered and nearly 800 people are evacuated (Vozia, Oleshky story).
The Oleshky truce expires; on Monday morning fighting resumes in Kherson region, with a medical facility hit in Kherson city and a drone strike on a car injuring two people (Vozia, Oleshky story).
Russian aerial bombs hit Komyshuvakha, Zaporizhzhia region — the school, then the shelter — on Zelensky's account.
Zelensky announces the strike and his toll — 18 killed, five injured — on Telegram; Reuters and Le Monde carry the announcement.

Checking in progress — the toll rises to 29, with 48 missing, in a nationwide overnight wave (queue #1171): acting regional head Semikin put the dead at 29 on Tuesday (AP, read in full), replacing the SES's Monday figure of 26 in place; the missing count was likewise replaced, 27 to 48. Added: the overnight barrage as Zelenskyy states it (289 drones, 17 ballistic and 59 cruise missiles), the Kharkiv medical-facility strike wounding at least 62 and the Dnipro attack (one killed, 17 wounded) as a Not-yet-verified claim — the figures are Ukrainian officials', carried by AP, Anadolu and DPA — and Russia's stated overnight position (856 drones downed) as a Verified stated position. No official video verified.
Correction — this story's web address has been corrected: it carried the first-published toll of 18 killed. The toll verified on this page is 26 (Ukraine's State Emergency Service), and the address no longer carries a number. The reporting itself is unchanged.
Checking in progress — the toll has risen to 26 (queue #1067): Ukraine's emergency services and President Zelensky, in his nightly address, put the dead at 26, with five people in hospital including two rescue workers (Reuters, updated 22:18Z, read in full in this run; AP and DW carry the same figure). The SES claim on this page has been edited in place from 24 to 26 — replace, don't stack; the day's earlier stages stay in this history. On the missing, the reports read differ: city council secretary Regina Kharchenko told Reuters 27 people were missing, while AP's Monday-evening report put about 20 people considered missing — the missing figure therefore stays labelled Not yet verified. Video check: no official-channel embeddable video of the nightly address was verified in this run, so the story continues without a video. The rescue continues and the page stays in Checking state.

Checking in progress — AP's full report has landed (published 18:38Z, read in full in this pass): it confirms the State Emergency Service toll of 24 killed, carries Zelenskyy's post on X that 10 guided bombs in total targeted the school used for aid distribution and the nearby shelter, and reports that as night fell responders were searching the rubble with flashlights. AP puts the missing at about 20, citing local officials, and says the death toll could rise — that figure does NOT match regional head Mykhailo Semikin's 27 missing (BBC), so the missing count is now openly disputed between the two reports and neither replaces the other; the note on the missing claim records the discrepancy. AP also reports Russian drone attacks elsewhere in Ukraine injured at least 17 people on Monday (12 in Kharkiv region, five in Odesa). No Russian response to the Komyshuvakha strike has been read, and the story stays in Checking. Video check in this pass: AP's material is outlet photos and video, not an embeddable official-channel video verified via oEmbed, so none is attached.
Checking in progress — the State Emergency Service count has landed: the SES reported at least 24 people killed and five injured in the Komyshuvakha bombing, among the dead two rescue workers (named by the SES as Denis Konovalenko and Oleksiy Sushchevsky) and four police officers, with two rescue workers among the wounded (UNITED24 Media, read in full in this pass, published 18:26Z; The Sun carries the same 24 figure). The toll claim on this page is EDITED IN PLACE — Zelensky's earlier figure of 18 killed and five injured is replaced, not stacked — and is now labelled Verified as the emergency service's own count. The regional head's 27-missing figure stays as its own Not yet verified claim; the rescue is ongoing, no Russian response has been read, and the story stays in Checking. Video check done in this pass: no embeddable official-channel video of this strike verified via oEmbed was found (the coverage found was outlet footage, including an ICTV telethon segment and the Kyiv Independent short already noted).
Checking in progress — the regional head's figures added (queue #1010/#1011): Mykhailo Semikin said 27 people are still missing after the Komyshuvakha bombing, people are still under the rubble and rescue teams are working at the scene, and at least nine 3,000kg aerial bombs hit the village (BBC, read in full in this pass; the Kyiv Independent carries the same 27-missing figure from local authorities, and Anadolu reports the rescue ongoing). The missing/bomb figures are labelled Not yet verified — no emergency-service count yet. Zelensky's added position (after the Oleshky evacuation there was a moment peace could look possible; Russia is sending the opposite signal) and the BBC's line that the Russian military has not publicly commented are also added. No official video attached — the only video found was an outlet short using Zelensky/Telegram footage, not an embeddable official-channel video. This story stays in Checking.
Story published in Checking state (queue #1004). Basis: Zelensky's own Telegram announcement, read via Reuters in full and Le Monde's live coverage in this pass.
