What happened
Australia arrived having scored 242 points and conceded six in the group stage, and for half an hour they looked ordinary: Fiji's intensity forced errors from Sergis and Kelleher, Yaranamua kicked the penalty and then barged over, and the Sydney crowd fell quiet. Church's first try, from an Aiken–Upton combination after a Fiji mistake, and Upton's leveller steadied the champions, but Fiji still had the half's last chance and dropped it.
The second half was the champions' answer, with one Fijian interruption: Church twice in quick succession around Chapman's try, Paseka's reply at 24–14 to keep the dream alive a little longer, and then Church collecting a kick deep in her own half and outrunning everyone for the try that ended it.
Both sides, in their own words
Both sides heard. Neither believed for free. Publishing a side's version is not endorsing it — the claim checks below are where verdicts live.
Side A · Australia
- Down 8–0 and rattled, the champions found a way: Church's four tries and a second half won 22–6. A fifth straight final, and a fourth straight title one win away.
- After scoring 242 points and conceding six in the group stage, this was the test the Jillaroos needed before New Zealand.
Side B · Fiji
- On World Cup debut, Fiji led the champions 8–0, were level at half-time and were still within ten points with 18 minutes left — no side has pushed Australia this hard in this tournament.
- Yaranamua scored or created everything Fiji made: a penalty, a try, both conversions and the pass for Paseka's try.
