What happened

Samoa, beaten finalists in 2022, were chasing a second straight final and started the night the louder side: Crichton's fifth-minute penalty put them ahead, and at 26–2 down they thought they had a way back when Crichton dived over on the half-hour — only for the bunker to rule Manuleleua had knocked on in the contest. Walsh scored at the other end two minutes later, Best added a fifth before the break, and Leniu's sin bin for dissent summed up Samoa's frustration.

After half-time the pattern held: Crichton pounced on Walsh's dropped catch to score, Walsh replied within three minutes; Tago crossed on the hour, Walsh completed his hat-trick in answer. Bostock's late try, his seventh of the tournament, closed a night that gives Australia and New Zealand both the men's and women's finals in Brisbane next Sunday.

Both sides, in their own words

Both sides heard. Neither believed for free. Publishing a side's version is not endorsing it — the claim checks below are where verdicts live.

Side A · Australia

  • Five tries before half-time and eight in all: the Kangaroos finally produced their best 80 minutes of the tournament when it mattered, with Walsh, Dearden and Munster running the game.
  • A fourth straight title is one win away, against New Zealand in Brisbane — the side Australia beat late in the tournament opener.

Side B · Samoa

  • Samoa scored first, had two tries disallowed — the first at 26–2 with the game still alive — and lost Leniu to the bin for dissent; their supporters say the big calls all went one way.
  • A second straight final was the prize after 2022, and for half an hour, at 2–0 up and pressing, it looked possible.

Australia beat Samoa 44–12 at Allianz Stadium, Sydney, on Sunday 8 November 2026 in the Rugby League World Cup semi-final, before a crowd of 41,259. Australia's tries: Tom Dearden, Jacob Preston, Tom Trbojevic, Reece Walsh (3), Bradman Best and Jack Bostock, with Cameron Munster kicking six goals; the Kangaroos led 26–2 at half-time. Samoa's points came from a Stephen Crichton penalty and converted try and an Izack Tago try. Reece Walsh scored his first international hat-trick. He crossed first about two minutes after Crichton's would-be try was disallowed, celebrated with a backflip, then dropped a high kick early in the second half to gift Crichton Samoa's first try — and scored his second three minutes later, off a Harry Grant short ball, before completing the hat-trick by finishing a team move that started in Australia's own half. Samoa had two tries disallowed: on the half-hour, the bunker ruled Francis Manuleleua had knocked on contesting a Jarome Luai bomb with Walsh, wiping out Crichton's dive-over; later, a further Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow score was also ruled out. Spencer Leniu was sin-binned for dissent in the 39th minute, after Best's try. The win sends Australia into the final at Brisbane's Suncorp Stadium on Sunday 15 November against New Zealand, who beat Tonga 34–10 in the first semi-final — a repeat of the 2013, 2008 and 2000 finals and of the two sides' opening-round meeting. Australia are chasing a fourth consecutive World Cup crown, having won the past three tournaments.
