Eva Geller, 90, shot in the Bondi Beach attack, dies in hospital almost a year later - police await the coroner's advice

Eva Geller, a 90-year-old great-grandmother and Holocaust survivor who was shot during the Bondi Beach terror attack on 14 December 2025, has died in hospital almost a year later. Australian Associated Press reports that she died at Sydney's Prince of Wales Hospital after a stroke, following months in and out of hospital with surgical complications from her wounds; Reuters confirms she died in a Sydney hospital overnight on Thursday. New South Wales Police said in a statement that they are aware of the death and 'are now awaiting further advice and are working with the office of the coroner'. Fifteen people were killed in the attack itself; her family consider her its 16th victim, but police have not formally restated the toll, and this page does not either.

Key points

  • Eva Geller, 90, a Holocaust survivor shot at Bondi Beach on 14 December 2025, died in a Sydney hospital overnight on Thursday after complications and a stroke.
  • She had spent the year in and out of hospital; her rabbi says she was told she would never walk again, and did.
  • Fifteen people were killed in the attack itself. Her family call her its 16th victim; police await the coroner's advice, so no settled toll of 16 is stated on this page.
  • Her funeral is scheduled for next week.

What happened

The Bondi Beach attack of 14 December 2025, on a Hanukkah celebration at one of Australia's best-known beaches, killed 15 people and wounded dozens - the country's deadliest mass shooting in decades. Its toll has never been only a number from that day: the wounded carried it through the year, in hospital wards and surgeries, and Geller's death is the toll still moving, eleven months on.

She becomes, on her family's account and several reports, the attack's eldest victim - another Holocaust survivor, Alex Kleytman, 87, was killed on the day. The formal step - a coroner's determination and any police restatement - is what separates that account from an official toll, and it is still to come.

The death: Eva Geller, 90, died overnight on Thursday 5 November at the Prince of Wales Hospital in Sydney. AAP reports she had a stroke after spending months in and out of that hospital with ongoing surgical complications from her gunshot wounds, including shrapnel in her leg and a recent infection. New South Wales Police said in a statement: 'NSW Police are aware that a 90-year-old woman - who was injured in the Bondi terror attack - has died overnight at a hospital in Sydney's Eastern Suburbs. Police are now awaiting further advice and are working with the office of the coroner.'

Why this label: Verified on Reuters' report (she died in a Sydney hospital overnight; police aware, awaiting the coroner) and AAP's fuller account (the hospital, the stroke, the complications, Rabbi Aron Moss's account), read via search in this run, with the BBC's report in agreement. The police statement is quoted from the force's own words as carried by both wires.

On the ladder: a claim earns Verified from primary evidence, or from two independent sources that do not copy each other.

Her year since the attack: Geller was among dozens of people wounded when gunmen opened fire on a Jewish holiday celebration at Bondi Beach on 14 December 2025. A Holocaust survivor born in Hungary in 1936 who escaped with her mother, she had been in and out of hospital ever since; Rabbi Aron Moss said she was told after an infection that she would never walk again, but got back up 'with sheer determination', and that she never really recovered from the attack. Her funeral is scheduled for next week.

Why this label: Verified across Reuters (the wounding, the dozens wounded, 'in and out of hospital', the funeral timing via ABC) and AAP (the Hungary birth, the rabbi's account of her recovery and walking again), read via search in this run. The rabbi's words are carried as his account of her year, attributed to him.

On the ladder: a claim earns Verified from primary evidence, or from two independent sources that do not copy each other.

Whether she is formally counted as the attack's 16th victim is not yet settled. Fifteen people were killed in the mass shooting itself. Her family consider her the 16th victim, and some outlets already report the toll as 16; but NSW Police say they are awaiting further advice and working with the coroner, AAP notes it remains unclear whether officials will prosecute an alleged gunman over her death, and no formal restatement of the toll had been published in the reporting read.

Why this label: Labelled not yet verified, deliberately: this is the outcome-word discipline applied to a death toll. The death is verified; the formal victim count is a coroner's and police determination that has not been made in the sources read, so the headline, slug and summary of this page carry the death and the pending advice - never a settled toll of 16.

On the ladder: the evidence so far sits low — early, single or social sources. We publish the claim as a claim, never as fact.

The attack itself: police say the alleged gunmen, Sajid Akram and his son Naveed Akram, opened fire on the Hanukkah celebration and were inspired by Islamic State. The shooting, on 14 December 2025, was Australia's deadliest mass shooting in decades.

Why this label: Verified as the police position as reported by Reuters (read via search in this run): the inspiration claim is the police's, attributed to them; the men's alleged role is carried with 'alleged' intact, as the proceedings are live.

On the ladder: a claim earns Verified from primary evidence, or from two independent sources that do not copy each other.

What we know / what we don't know yet

What we know

  • Eva Geller died overnight on Thursday at a Sydney hospital, from complications of the wounds she suffered on 14 December 2025.
  • NSW Police are aware of the death and are working with the coroner, awaiting further advice.
  • Fifteen people were killed in the attack itself; her family consider her its 16th victim.

What we don't know yet

  • Whether the coroner and police formally count her as the attack's 16th victim - not settled in the reporting read.
  • Whether further charges follow over her death - AAP reports this is unclear.
  • The coroner's findings on the precise cause of death.

Why it matters

Mass attacks are usually counted once, on the day. Geller's death is a reminder that the count can keep moving for a year - through infections, strokes and surgeries far from the scene - and that behind the formal question of a toll sits a 90-year-old who survived the Holocaust, was told she would never walk again, walked, and never recovered from being shot at a celebration on a beach.

Background

  • Gunmen open fire on a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach, Sydney: 15 people killed, dozens wounded, Geller among them.

  • Geller spends months in and out of Prince of Wales Hospital with surgical complications; told she would never walk again, she walks again.

  • She dies overnight on Thursday after a stroke; NSW Police confirm they are aware and are working with the coroner.
