Pope Leo XIV departs Rome for his 12-day South America trip to Uruguay, Argentina and Peru, a month after lung surgery

Pope Leo XIV has begun his 12-day apostolic journey to Uruguay, Argentina and Peru. The Holy See Press Office confirmed that he departed Rome's Fiumicino airport at 07:05 on Friday 6 November aboard an ITA Airways flight for Montevideo, where his aircraft is expected to land at 16:30 local time. The trip, running to 17 November, is the first papal visit to Latin America of his pontificate and his longest journey to date: about 31,000 kilometres across 10 cities and 36 speeches, ending in Peru, where he lived for decades as a missionary and was bishop of Chiclayo. It comes a month after surgery that removed part of his right lung; the Vatican says he has completely healed and that no special precautions are being taken.

What happened

Leo, born in Chicago, spent decades in Peru as an Augustinian missionary and became a Peruvian citizen; the Vatican's spokesman calls this journey a homecoming. It is his sixth apostolic journey and the first to Latin America, taking in the homeland of his predecessor, Pope Francis - who never visited Argentina as pope - and Uruguay, one of the region's most secularised countries.

The journey was in doubt until late October: two weeks after his 13 October lung surgery, his doctors confirmed it would go ahead on the published schedule, unchanged. The programme is demanding - nine public Masses and travel to a new destination on most days, including high-altitude Cusco in Peru.

The departure: the Holy See Press Office's bulletin of 6 November records that Pope Leo XIV began his sixth apostolic journey this morning, left the Vatican by car for Rome-Fiumicino airport, and departed at 07:05 aboard an ITA Airways aircraft for Montevideo. The aircraft is expected to land at Montevideo-Carrasco International Airport at 16:30 local time (20:30 in Rome), where an official welcome, a welcome ceremony at Plaza Independencia and a visit to President Yamandu Orsi are scheduled the same day.

Why this label: Verified on the Holy See Press Office's own departure bulletin (the primary source, read via search in this run) and the Vatican's published programme, with Reuters - reporting from aboard the papal flight - in agreement that he departed Rome early on Friday morning and is due in Uruguay at 16:30. The earlier scan's caution is discharged: secondary carries said 'departed' before the scheduled time; this page publishes the departure only on the Press Office's own record of it.

On the ladder: a claim earns Verified from primary evidence, or from two independent sources that do not copy each other.

Verified
The shape of the trip: Uruguay from 6 to 8 November (Montevideo, Paysandu and Florida), Argentina from 8 to 11 November, and Peru from 11 to 17 November, where he will spend six days and return to Chiclayo, the diocese he led as bishop from 2015 to 2023. Reuters puts the journey at some 31,000 km across 10 cities with 36 speeches; it is the first visit to Latin America of his pontificate and his longest international journey to date.

Why this label: Verified on the Vatican's published programme (dates and cities) with Reuters' aboard-the-flight report for the distance, city and speech counts, and the National Catholic Register's account of the programme in agreement. Crowd expectations in some reporting ('millions-strong crowds') are expectations, not facts, and are not carried as claims.

On the ladder: a claim earns Verified from primary evidence, or from two independent sources that do not copy each other.

The health question: Leo, 71, underwent surgery on 13 October at which the lower lobe of his right lung was removed. The Vatican said this week that he had completely healed and that no special precautions were being taken for the tour; his doctors confirmed on 26 October that the trip would proceed on its published schedule, and the Holy See Press Office director, Matteo Bruni, told journalists on 3 November that the pope is clinically fit for the journey, with no particular medical accommodation or equipment, while describing the trip as a 'homecoming' to places where Leo spent a long time.

Why this label: Verified as the Vatican's and his doctors' stated position: Reuters (the surgery, the 'completely healed' line and Bruni's 'homecoming' words), the National Catholic Register's report of the 26 October doctors' confirmation, and OSV News' report of the 3 November Press Office briefing (clinically fit, ordinary medical assistance). Whether the full programme is completed as scheduled is a future fact and is in the don't-know list, not claimed here.

The pope's own words before departure: at his general audience on Wednesday 4 November, Leo said: 'The day after tomorrow, I will begin my Apostolic Journey to Uruguay, Argentina, and Peru. I ask you to accompany me with your prayers, that the Lord may bless this mission in these countries, which are so dear to me.'

Why this label: Verified as the pope's own words at the 4 November general audience, as recorded by Vatican News (its report of the audience, carried in the description of Vatican News' own video of the remarks, read via search in this run). A principal's own words are verified by the words themselves; what he says and does on the journey is reported as it happens, in later updates.

What we know / what we don't know yet

What we know

  • The pope departed Rome at 07:05 on Friday 6 November for Montevideo, on the Holy See Press Office's own bulletin.
  • The published programme runs to 17 November: Uruguay 6-8, Argentina 8-11, Peru 11-17 November.
  • The Vatican's stated position is that he has completely healed from his October lung surgery and needs no special precautions.

What we don't know yet

  • The Montevideo arrival and the day's events - the landing is expected at 16:30 local time, after this page was published.
  • Whether the full programme is completed exactly as scheduled, including the high-altitude stops in Peru.
  • The content of the 36 speeches, and the crowds the journey draws - expectations in some reporting are not carried as facts.

Why it matters

A pope returning to the continent where he spent his priesthood would be a major journey in any year. Doing it twelve days long, across three countries, a month after lung cancer surgery - with the Vatican insisting the schedule stands unchanged - makes it a test of the 71-year-old pontiff's health as well as the defining trip of his pontificate so far.
