Everton 3–1 Coventry City: Barry's five-minute brace turns it around and sends the Toffees fifth

Everton came from behind to beat Coventry City 3–1 at Hill Dickinson Stadium on Friday 6 November 2026 in the Premier League, Matchday 10. Yann Gboho put Coventry ahead in the 52nd minute with his first goal for the club, but Thierno Barry headed an equaliser from Vitaliy Mykolenko's cross four minutes later and bundled in a second in the 61st minute, before setting up Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall for the third in the 81st. The win — Everton's third in a row — sends them fifth overnight, on the night David Moyes equalled Harry Catterick's record of 592 matches in charge of the club.

What happened

Coventry, managed by former Everton manager Frank Lampard and newly promoted, were the better side for long stretches of a goalless first half and led seven minutes after the break through Gboho. The game flipped in five minutes: Barry, Everton's only recognised striker, headed in Mykolenko's cross and then bundled in a second from close range, and the same player set up Dewsbury-Hall to seal it late on.

The night carried a landmark off the pitch as well: it was David Moyes's 592nd match in charge of Everton, equalling Harry Catterick's club record. A third successive win took the focus, in PA's words, off the circus surrounding Jack Grealish, who has missed four matches after being disciplined by the club and returned to training earlier in the day on a tailored programme.

Both sides, in their own words

Both sides heard. Neither believed for free. Publishing a side's version is not endorsing it — the claim checks below are where verdicts live.

Side A · Everton

  • A goal down at home to a newly promoted side, Everton scored three in 29 minutes — Barry cannot stop scoring, and this squad keeps finding a way.
  • Fifth in the league on the night Moyes equalled Catterick's 592 games in charge: the landmark was marked with a win, not a wobble.

Side B · Coventry City

  • Coventry led through Gboho's first goal for the club and had two penalty appeals checked and turned away — the Tarkowski hair-pull on Yirenkyi and the Mykolenko challenge on Awoniyi ruled outside the box.
  • For 52 minutes Frank Lampard's side were the better team at his old club; the game was lost in a five-minute collapse in their own six-yard box, not across the whole night.

Everton beat Coventry City 3–1 at Hill Dickinson Stadium on Friday 6 November 2026 in Premier League Matchday 10. The scorers: Yann Gboho for Coventry (52'), then Thierno Barry (56' and 61') and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall (81') for Everton. It was goalless at half-time. Gboho's opener was his first goal for Coventry, in only his second league appearance. Barry's equaliser was a header from Vitaliy Mykolenko's cross; his second, five minutes later, was bundled in from barely two yards out; and Barry then provided the assist for Dewsbury-Hall's angled third, nine minutes from time. Coventry had two penalty appeals checked and not given: James Tarkowski's tangle with Caleb Yirenkyi, in which he appeared to pull the midfielder's hair with the score goalless, drew no action from VAR; and Vitalii Mykolenko's challenge on Taiwo Awoniyi was ruled to have been made fractionally outside the box. Barry's second goal also stood despite suggestions the ball had brushed his arm before crossing the line. The win is Everton's third in a row and lifts them to fifth in the Premier League overnight, displacing Liverpool. It came on the night manager David Moyes equalled Harry Catterick's record of 592 matches in charge of Everton. Barry has now scored in three successive games for the first time as an Everton player, with six goals in his last seven matches in all competitions and 10 for the season.
