What happened

This was a relegation six-pointer at the wrong end of the Bundesliga: Hamburg began the night five points better off than Gladbach but only two clear of the relegation zone, and Gladbach arrived bottom with four points from eight games. The game turned in a twenty-minute spell either side of half-time — Scally's equaliser, Itakura's dismissal, and two Hamburg goals in eleven minutes.

The two long-range goals bookended it: Muheim's 11th-minute rocket was his third goal from range this season, and Grønbæk — voted Man of the Match — first created Nandja's goal and then scored the night's second screamer himself.

Both sides, in their own words

Both sides heard. Neither believed for free. Publishing a side's version is not endorsing it — the claim checks below are where verdicts live.

Side A · Hamburger SV

  • Two goals from outside the box, one of them the fastest shot of the Bundesliga season — Hamburg did not just beat the bottom club, they put on a shooting exhibition.
  • A fourth win of the season, a third straight home league win, and daylight between HSV and the relegation zone: the Volksparkstadion went home happy.

Side B · Borussia Mönchengladbach

  • Scally's equaliser on the stroke of half-time had Gladbach level and in the game — the red card, not the first half, is where this one was lost.
  • Goalkeeper Daniel Batz made a string of fine saves to keep the score down; bottom after nine games is a crisis, but it is not a goalkeeping one.
