What happened

A cagey first half at Stamford Bridge ended goalless, with Shakhtar's best chance falling to Kauã Elias. Then, just before the hour, Doumbia was quickest to react to a ball across the box and slammed in the finish at the near post — a messy goal, but the only one of the night.

Shakhtar pushed for an equaliser and Sporting might have doubled their lead through Quaresma's header, saved brilliantly by Riznyk. In the end the single goal was enough: Sporting left London with three points and a top-five place intact.

Both sides, in their own words

Both sides heard. Neither believed for free. Publishing a side's version is not endorsing it — the claim checks below are where verdicts live.

Side A · Shakhtar Donetsk

  • Shakhtar made the chances — Elias blocked near the line, Riznyk forced into a brilliant save at the other end — but never made one count.
  • A home game in London, a goalless first half, and still nothing to show for it: the chances were there, the finish was not.

Side B · Sporting CP

  • One messy finish from Doumbia, one clean sheet, three points: Sporting did not need to be pretty to stay in the top five.
  • Three wins from four in the league phase — the Portuguese champions are doing their Champions League work quietly and efficiently.
