Gauhati High Court quashes activist Pranab Doley's NSA detention and orders his immediate release

The Gauhati High Court on Friday 6 November 2026 quashed the preventive detention of indigenous land-rights activist Pranab Doley under the National Security Act (NSA) and directed the authorities to release him from preventive detention immediately. A division bench of Justices Kalyan Rai Surana and Susmita Phukan Khaund, hearing Doley's habeas corpus petition, cited serious procedural lapses and violations of constitutional safeguards. Assam's government had invoked the NSA against Doley on 30 July — one day after a Golaghat court granted him bail in the protest case that followed his 12 July arrest over opposition to a luxury hotel project near Kaziranga National Park. The outcome word is 'quashes': the detention order is struck down, and his release is ordered; the detailed written judgment is still awaited.
