Bayer Leverkusen 0–1 Marseille: Gouiri's solo goal gives Marseille their first Europa League win and ends Leverkusen's perfect start

Olympique Marseille beat Bayer Leverkusen 1–0 at the BayArena on Thursday 5 November 2026 in the Europa League league phase. After a goalless first half, Algerian forward Amine Gouiri scored the only goal in the 77th minute — collecting the ball in his own half, shaking off Edmond Tapsoba and curling a right-footed shot into the far corner past Mark Flekken, who had denied him one-on-one in the 7th minute. It was Marseille's first win and first points of the campaign after three defeats, and Leverkusen's first defeat — and the first goal the competition's last unbeaten defence had conceded.

What happened

Leverkusen had made a perfect start to the league phase — wins over Celje, Lech Poznań and OFI Crete, second in the table and not a goal conceded — while Marseille had lost every European match they had played and sat pointless. The game followed that script for 77 minutes: Miguel Gutiérrez hit the woodwork via a deflection for the hosts' best first-half chance, and Patrik Schick headed over after the break.

Then Gouiri, the Algeria international who had already been denied once by Flekken after a solo run, did it again — this time finishing the run himself. Marseille saw out the last minutes with the scorer replaced by Neal Maupay at 84'.
