Spain train crash: two high-speed trains collide near Toledo — the death toll is disputed

A Renfe AVE train ran into the back of a stationary Iryo train near Urda, in Toledo province, shortly before 9am on Wednesday, sending carriages down an embankment. The collision itself is confirmed by the rail operator Adif and every major outlet. The death toll is not settled: the Castilla-La Mancha regional government's figures rose through the day — 10, then 30, then 31, then at least 64 — and regional president Emiliano García-Page now says the latest data suggest at least 68 dead, with no per-train split given for that figure, and officials say it may rise further. Vozia is publishing the story with the toll shown openly as disputed.
