Lando Norris wins a wet São Paulo Grand Prix as Mercedes clinch the constructors' championship

Lando Norris won the São Paulo Grand Prix at Interlagos on Sunday 8 November 2026, beating Max Verstappen by 14.6 seconds in a 71-lap race that began wet, dried out and ended in rain. Verstappen climbed from 21st on the grid to second, with his Red Bull team-mate Isack Hadjar third. George Russell finished fourth and Kimi Antonelli fifth for Mercedes — enough to clinch the constructors' championship, the team's ninth title and its first since 2021, completing a title double a week after Antonelli became the youngest drivers' champion.

What happened

Interlagos delivered its usual chaos: a damp start, a long dry middle on slick tyres, and a late shower that sent everyone back to the pits. Norris lost the lead at the start, regained it when Antonelli spun, and controlled the race from there — his third win of the season and his second in a row in São Paulo. Behind him, Verstappen's climb from 21st to second was the drive of the day, and Red Bull took a double podium.

For Mercedes, fourth and fifth were a coronation rather than a race: the constructors' title returns to the team for the first time since its run of eight in a row ended in 2021, a week after its 20-year-old driver Antonelli took the drivers' crown in Mexico City.

George Russell finished fourth and Kimi Antonelli fifth for Mercedes, and those results clinched the 2026 constructors' championship for Mercedes — the team's ninth constructors' title and its first since 2021. It completes a title double: Antonelli, 20, became the youngest drivers' champion in Mexico City a week earlier. Mercedes needed only to outscore Ferrari by three points in São Paulo; Charles Leclerc finished seventh and Lewis Hamilton ninth for Ferrari.

The race began wet. Antonelli jumped Norris at the start to lead, and after the first pit stops — made as the track dried — Antonelli spun at Turn 1 on lap 20 and Norris took a lead he kept. Russell spun in the pit-lane exit and recovered to fourth. Late rain forced the whole field back onto intermediate tyres for the closing laps. Norris's own verdict: 'It was a very tough race, very, very tough… the main thing today was I just kept it cool and I didn't make any mistakes.'

What we know / what we don't know yet

What we know

  • The full finishing order and times, from Formula 1's official results, and that the constructors' championship is decided — Mercedes cannot now be caught.

What we don't know yet

  • The outcome of the post-race investigation into Antonelli's pit-lane release, which Formula 1's report says was opened after the race; no decision had been announced in the reports read, and any penalty would not change the constructors' outcome reported here.

Why it matters

Both Formula 1 championships for 2026 are now settled with three races to spare: Antonelli the youngest drivers' champion, and Mercedes constructors' champions again after four years away. What remains this season is the fight for the places — and the money — behind them, starting in Las Vegas.

Background

  • Kimi Antonelli, 20, becomes Formula 1's youngest world champion in Mexico City, where Verstappen wins the race (Vozia).

  • Norris wins in São Paulo and Mercedes take the constructors' title — a championship double.
