What happened

Sunderland came into Sunday bottom of the table and without a league win since August, with Thursday's Europa League defeat by Dinamo Zagreb the latest setback. Against Chelsea they were energetic from the start, Brobbey giving Colwill a torrid afternoon, and after Le Fee's penalty they defended the lead doggedly through the second half as Chelsea held the ball without making it count.
