What happened

Bawa and Lawrence's run was the story of Africa's beach volleyball at these Games: after the other African pairs — from Ghana, DR Congo, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Egypt and Morocco — went out, the Nigerians were the continent's last pair standing, and they reached the last eight with a straight-sets win over Thailand on Monday.

The quarter-final was a step too far. Both and de Groot, bronze medallists at the Under-18 World Championships, won in straight sets on Tuesday and went on to reach the final. Nigeria's campaign in the event ends at the quarter-final stage.
